Falmer

ART: Artwave is upon us. The Art and Soul show starts tomorrow (Saturday) at Falmer village hall and St Laurence church and we have a brilliant line-up this year, including the wonderful ceramicist Marion Brandis, who made the excellent Tabby Cat that was used to illustrate an article about Artwave in last week's Sussex Express. We have many more artists, a sculptor, a potter, painters, printers, illustrators, collage makers, abstract art, figurative art, in other words, something for everyone. The show is open from 11am to 5pm for the duration of Artwave, we will also be open on Friday August 26, Bank Holiday Monday August 29 and Friday September 2. Hope to see you there.

ANTS: The recent lovely weather has brought out a lot of insects. Our lawn is alive with ants and as a consequence we have a great many green woodpeckers visiting the garden to feast on them. We also have a lot of swallows and house martins catching the flying ants on the wing. I was stung on the ankle by something last week, and judging from the reaction I had, I suspect that may have been an ant, or even two.

SUMMER FRUIT: Other things that seem to be thriving are the weeds, particularly brambles. The wet weather in spring followed by the (comparatively) warm summer has seen them throwing out enormous long shoots and trying to spread as far as they can. The blackberries this year are going to be good that is certain, they are already beginning to look ripe. The apples seem to be cropping well too, this year, and we have been feasting on our home-grown apricots for several weeks now, sadly they have just come to an end.
