Felpham College trio step out for cancer awareness

Three sixth-formers at Felpham Community College swopped exams for endurance when they walked a marathon for charity.

Amber Ragless, Lauren McCourt and Freya Bottomley (all aged 18) expect to have raised about 700 by completing the recent Moonwalk.

They were among the youngest unaccompanied entrants among the 15,000 walkers wearing decorated bras at night over a 26.2 mile circuit around London in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness.

The charity trek took place two days before one of Amber's French A-level exams. But the trio of friends were determined to put in the training and complete the course, which began and ended at Hyde Park, in spite of developing large blisters on their feet.

Lauren said: "My nan died of breast cancer and that's what motivated me to finish the Moonwalk.

"I wanted to be able to say that I had done it for her." She spoke about the emotions of the night as everyone held hands and hugged before the start in memory of loved ones who had died from the cancer. Amber said: "The last six miles were the worst bit of the Moonwalk.

"We had all split up as well by then which meant we had no-one to talk to help ourselves along. But there would have been no point in giving up then."

Amber and Lauren took ten hours to complete the Moonwalk.

Freya managed it in nine-and-a-half hours. She completed up to 20 miles power walking in training though it was difficult for all three of them to train together because of their different commitments.

She said: "I enjoyed power walking. I want to do the Moonwalk again next year."
