Film given new dimension by creative director

Even though I have been a fashion intern before, I have no interest or knowledge of high-end couture so it was the character element of documentary film The September Issue which appealed to me.

That character being the infamous American editor of Vogue, Anna Wintour.

As a very private and guarded public figure, Anna has been the object of many opinions and myths.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006) film's ruthless and heartless main character '“ editor of Runway magazine, played by Meryl Streep '“ is said to be based on her.

The September Issue chronicles Anna's preparations for the biggest-ever September issue to date in 2007.

Although Anna was interesting for her blank expressions and cut-throat editing, it was another who stole the limelight '“ creative director Grace Coddington.

A former professional model, Grace '“ who started at American Vogue on the same day as Anna '“ shoots the majority of the fashion photography for the magazine.

It is her reaction to the 'killing' of some of her photographs which makes for classic viewing.

Grace gets annoyed and upset when she finds out images have been cut from the magazine.

Her facial reactions and expressions are often very amusing when this happens.

Ironically Grace originally flatly refused to take part in the documentary and had to be coaxed into it.

I'm glad she was convinced or this documentary could have been a one-dimensional bore.
