NEIGHBOURS have been praised for their part in preventing a blaze spreading.

Firefighters worked on Sunday evening to stop flames spreading from a ground floor flat in Dorset Road to the rest of the house.

The flat was smoke-logged and two rooms were severely damaged.

It is believed an electrical fault may have been to blame.

Two fire crews from Hastings assisted Bexhill firefighters under Crew Commander Graham Hobden.

He said later: "At about 6pm we had a call to a flat at Dorset Road. The information was that smoke was coming from the flat and that, possibly, people were inside.

"When we turned up the neighbours were very good. They waved us down as we got there and gave us as much information as they could.

"They were not sure whether there was anyone in there."

Fire crews broke down the door to get in. Mr Hobden said: "The fire was in the back of the flat. Two rooms were alight - a utility room and the dining room.

"There was a lot of smoke coming out of the front of the building. The wind was from the back and blowing it through the flat."

Two firefighters searched the building and found no-one.

The owners later arrived home.

It took 15 to 20 minutes to locate the fire and extinguish it.

Smoke detectors were fitted and were operating when crews arrived.
