100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 25 August 1916. Piltdown Soldier Killed. Much regret has been occasioned in the district by the sad news, which was received at the end of last week, of the death in action of Private George Staplehurst, son of Mr and Mrs R Staplehurst, of Shortbridge, Piltdown. The young soldier, he was only 22 years of age, joined the Sussex Regiment in September 1914, and had only been in France about two months when on the 6th inst he met his death while gallantly doing his duty to home and country. He was formerly in the employ of Mr Soames of Sheffield Park, and will be remembered by many as the captain of the Buckham Hill football team. He is commemorated on the Fletching War memorial.

The Roll of Honour has: Staplehurst Private. G 3580 7th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 12th Division. Died of wounds 6 August 1916. Aged 23. Son of Ross and Louisa Staplehurst of Rose Cottage Piltdown. Employee of Sheffield Park. Born in Fletching and enlisted in Uckfield. Resident of Honeysuckle Cottages, Piltdown. Buried in Varennes Military Cemetery.
