East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service confirmed on Twitter that Castle Gate Road has been closed as a result of the incident.
It said it was working with Sussex Archaeological Society, East Sussex Highways, Lewes District Council and Eastbourne Borough Council to ensure public safety.
