Sussex folk revivalist Shirley Collins returns to her home town of Hastings on Wednesday October 28 for the opening night of the four day Black Huts arts festival.

It is impossible to say how many traditional Sussex songs may have been lost without the work of those like Shirley and the Rottingden base Copper family.

Shirley, who made her first recording with her sister Dolly 60 years ago, says: “Singing English folk songs is as crucial to me as walking the Sussex landscape.”

She will be at the Electric Palace on October 28 at 8pm, speaking of her time in blitz-hit Hastings and her development as a singer and gatherer of songs.

A film of Shirley’s life will be released in 2016.
