Going underground at Winchelsea

The next tour of the medieval wine cellars under Winchelsea takes place at 2pm on Saturday June 6 and coincides with Open Garden Day from 1pm to 5.30pm.

Winchelsea boasts more than 50 medieval cellars, most of which are vaulted and were built around 1290-1300. Winchelsea Archaeological Society conducts tours of the cellars. Find out why and how they were built, and learn of the history of the Ancient Town and Cinque Port. The cost is £5 and includes a guidebook to the cellars. All tours start in Castle Street. Reservations to 01797224446 or tours@winchelsea.net.
