FIDDLER ON THE ROOF: Hailsham Old Pavilion Society (HOPS) is screening the 1971 film musical, Fiddler on the Roof, at The Pavilion, George Street on Saturday, October 1 at 7.15pm (doors open at 6.45pm). COMMUNITY GROUPS: The Community Groups Forum is looking for more representatives and members from local community groups, voluntary organisations, charities, parent and teacher groups and residents’associations among others to share information on developments of interest including new funding opportunities, in addition to enabling partnership working with other organisations. The next meeting will take place at 6.30pm on Wednesday October 12 at the Hailsham Parish Church lounge. Meetings are also scheduled for Tuesday November 8 and Wednesday December 7. REMEMBRANCE WREATHS: The 2016 Remembrance Service at the Hailsham War Memorial organised by Hailsham and District Branch, Royal British Legion is to be held on Sunday November 13. Any organisation or individuals that would like to place Wreaths, sprays, chaplets and crosses during this service is advised to contact the Hailsham and District Poppy Organiser, Mike Weller on 01323 440749 as soon as possible or by the 30 September to enable an order to be placed with the Poppy Appeal at Aylesford. Donations are requested to cover the cost and assist the Poppy Appeal in helping ex-service personnel, serving personnel, dependents in their hour of need.

HOLIDAY CLUB: October half term is just around the corner and fast approaching. Give your children a half term to remember with Freedom Leisure’s fun filled holiday club. Children can take part in a number of activities including ten pin bowling, trip to the cinema, team games, arts and crafts. The clubs are open to children aged 6 to 12 years. HEARING BUS: The East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre and Adults Social Care mobile unit for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people will be visiting Tesco car park, North Street, from 10.30am to 3.30pm on Monday. The bus is accessible to wheelchair users and representatives will be available to provide individual information and advice on all aspects of hearing loss. PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY: Thursday’s meeting was a talk given by Polina Plotnikova a Russian born UK based photographer. Her style developed through love and knowledge of art. Polina impressed members with her fine art images of flower portraits and still life. She explained her thinking behind the compositions, which sometimes take months in planning. Her approach to flower photography is similar to that of a portrait photographer, for every flower and plant that she photographs, Polina finds a unique look, not purely botanical, but with mood and character, which ultimately unlocks the hidden beauty. Polina’s still life images proved her to be a perfectionist. Each one was stunning, drawing the viewer into the picture with many characteristics of historical paintings. An extremely inspirational evening, and a great pleasure for members to enjoy Polina’s lecture.

CAT VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers and Fundraisers are needed at the Adoption Centre Fairs. There are five major fundraising events held each year and generate valuable funds for our Friends of group. They are a great way for people to meet and support Cats Protection and the work we do helping the cats in our area. They are always pleased to welcome new volunteers and fundraisers who can help raise funds and promote the Friends of in a number of ways: a need on day before events for ‘heavy duty’ tasks including setting up gazebos and tables and clearing away after fair, helping to set up stalls on the day of events, helping run a stall for a few hours or packing away at the end of the day, making and donating a cake, or growing some plants to sell or maybe you can craft items, helping at store collections, holding your own event and donate the proceeds (or some of them) to Friends of or maybe you have a great fundraising idea that could help the cats in our care. BLOOMING SUCCESS: Environment Hailsham celebrated success at the South and South East in Bloom event in Fareham Hampshire this week by being awarded Silver Gilt in the Large Town category. Environment Hailsham provides all the floral arrangements in the town and was pleased to have received this level of award with higher marks this year in the Silver Gilt banding. Chairman, Richard Grocock said ‘The Environment Hailsham volunteers have worked really hard this year battling against the elements of the weather and the difficulties with the town’s refurbishment so we are absolutely delighted to have been recognised for the efforts made by the team from the Judges. As an independent charity we do struggle with the limited budget and small number of volunteers but we have been cheered by the super response from the public on our colourful displays. We will continue to fill the town with flowers and to encourage pride in our area and try to aim for the Gold Award.’ The ceremony was attended by many hundred entrants from Dorset to Kent and compered by Peter Holman, Chairman of South and South East in Bloom and Jim Buttress, RHS representative, broadcaster and TV personality, and the certificate presented by Jim Talbot of BBC radio Kent, Sussex and Surrey and presenter of Dig It, a Sunday morning Gardening Club. Hailsham Town Mayor, Nigel Coltman, has commended the Environment Hailsham team for their efforts, ‘This is excellent news and I congratulate everyone involved for all the hard work they have put in and who have contributed to Hailsham’s success in the competition.’

U3A: On Tuesday there is a talk on the Role of the Lord Lieutenant in East Sussex at the Civic Community Hall, Vicarage Field from 2pm. Visitors £2.

HISTORY SOCIETY: In July, 20 members had an interesting evening out, when they visited the Court House Museum, and St Nicholas Church at Pevensey. Guided by Peter Harrison at the Court House Museum, and Owen Visick at the Church. The poster just inside the church, saying welcome to the Hailsham History Society was a nice touch. Peter’s knowledge of the Court House, and of Pevensey, is immense, and he spoke about the history and events that have happened over the centuries. Owen gave us a lot of information regarding the church, and what a lovely building it is. Both are well worth a visit, especially as this year is the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, and the 800th anniversary of Pevensey Church. Our own Museum at Blackman’s Yard (behind the Kemer Kebab shop), Market Street, Hailsham, is open on Friday and Saturday mornings until the end of September between 10am and 12.30pm. Admission is free and well worth a visit, whether you are an ‘old timer’ of the town, or a newcomer. Monthly meetings of the society, resumed on the September 14 and are on the second Wednesday of every month at 7pm for 7.30pm start, at the Methodist Church Hall. All welcome. Visitors £2.50. VEGAN CREAM TEA: Hailsham Vegan Group has proved a great success with numbers increasing by the month at their pop-up dining events. You don’t have to be vegan to take part. CHARITY BARBECUE: This year’s Charity Summer Barbecue for Mr Gulzar’s birthday is in support of Macmillan Cancer Support, Children with Cancer Fund, SASBAH (Sussex Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus), Cruse Bereavement Care, and the Chaseley Trust.
