'˜Have a go' at being a retained firefighter

Would-be firefighters are being invited to '˜have a go' at two special days designed to show what the job is all about.

Informal ‘have a go’ days are being held at Chichester Fire Station on Saturday, July 2 and at Petworth Fire Station on July 9, to give people the opportunity to discover what a career as a retained firefighter can offer them.

Those attending will be able to try their hand at some firefighting activities and use a range of equipment in a safe environment.

There will also be an opportunity to find out more about the physical and written entry tests, look around a busy fire station and chat to current retained firefighters about their role.

Retained firefighters are men and women who combine their day jobs or duties with being ‘on call’ for the fire service, ready to respond to emergencies when they are needed.

They receive regular training to equip them with the skills to deal with fires, road traffic accidents and a wide range of other emergencies.

They also play an important role in community engagement activities.

Retained firefighters receive an annual retaining fee as well as additional payments for any incidents or community safety events they attend.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service station officer, Maisie Rudkin, said: “For a combination of reasons recruiting new retained firefighters is an on-going challenge for us, as it is for all fire services.

“We’re really keen to reach people who have a passion to protect their community who may not have considered being a retained firefighter before.

“Our retained firefighters are men and women who come from all walks of life and who fit being a retained firefighter around their existing jobs and commitments. “Becoming a retained firefighter offers people a fantastic opportunity to give something back to their community and get paid while they are doing it.

Both days will run from 10am until 1pm and are open to anyone aged 18 or over.

There is no need to book in advance, simply drop in wearing comfortable clothing that is suitable for physical activity. Those unable to attend can call 01243 642134 for information on becoming a retained firefighter.
