High Society at Bexhill High

High Society is a theatre group at Bexhill High school that's going from strength to strength.

The club gets together after school on Mondays with teachers Teri White and Emma Ungless to learn all sides of theatre and performance, from lighting the stage to dancing in the spotlight.

High Society is made up of 12-16 year olds and started back in September.

Terri commented: "We were trying to put a show together and then we ended up doing Musicality, which was different songs from different shows.

"Then they wanted to carry on, so we started on Mondays like a theatre society learning different aspects of the theatre - some weeks we cover lighting, or sound, or stage management, or different styles of dance from street to ballet to jazz.

"When we started, there were only a few of them but now they are really keen."

She is not surprised at the interest from youngsters, although Year 11 pupils had to drop out because of examwork.

"The school is so rich with talent," she commented. "It is just a case of tapping into that talent and encouraging the kids to showcase it."

Emma added: "They really get involved - they love it, we see so much enjoyment from them."

Plans for the future include a full-blown musical show next year but first they will perform at Pebsham Sports & Social Club on Saturday May 17 from 8pm, when High Society will perform songs and dances from different musicals, followed by a disco and karaoke to raise funds for the cancer care unit facilities at the Conquest Hospital.

They are also looking forward to the last week of summer term which will involved workshops in enrichment week, and a performance of Decades Of Dance, which covers popular dances from past times such as charleston and lindy hop.
