HUNDREDS COMPLETE MARATHON ON THE DOWNS '“ MORE PICTURES

HUNDREDS of people of all ages and abilities took to the hills as they competed in a marathon known as the "tough one".

The Three Forts marathon, held on Sunday, links the Iron Age forts of Cissbury, Devil's Dyke and Chanctonbury on the Sussex Downs.

More than 500 people entered the full marathon, 27 miles, and the half marathon, both of which started at the foot of the Downs in Hill Barn Lane, Worthing. There was also a hike and a family walk.

Race director Mike Airey, who started the race 10 years ago and took part this year, said: "It was exceptionally tough and is certainly a hard course, but a good day was had by all."

The full marathon was won by Stuart Mills, a Brighton and Hove City Athletic Club runner, who finished in three hours and seven minutes, setting a new course record.

The event, organised by Rotary Clubs in Worthing, Storrington, Steyning and Henfield, raises money for St Barnabas Hospice in Durrington and other Rotary charities.
