Olympic Ice Skater Jayne Torvill officially opened Newton and Frost’s new Timber Building Display Centre at Merriments, Hurst Green, East Sussex on Good Friday.

Jayne is patron of the youth charity Heathfield Works, whose aim is to help youngsters make the transition from education to the workplace.

Students from the charity have assisted with the development of Newton and Frost’s small timber village of summerhouses, snappy sheds and Wendy Houses. Sally Frost, Director of Newton and Frost said: ‘Merriments has a lovely friendly feel about it. Everything about it feels cherished which makes visitors feel special. We are very privileged to be here.”

Newton and Frost was founded in 1979 and has a busy working yard at Horam, near Heathfield, East Sussex, from which fencing products and accessories are sold to the trade and general public. There is also another smaller display centre at Horam.

With plans to expand, the company recently received assistance from Locate East Sussex in securing a grant from the government’s Regional Growth Fund, resulting in the creation of seven new jobs.
