KEEP IT CLEAN

Noisy roadworks, filthy pavements and unhelpful road signs are set to be a thing of the past, following the launch of a scheme which aims to bring out the caring side of contractors who dig up the county's roads.

East Sussex County Council is calling for all the utility companies who dig up roads, and its own partnership East Sussex Highways, to join its Considerate Contractor scheme.

The new scheme, launched this week, urges contractors to be more caring towards the needs of businesses, site personnel, visitors and the travelling public.

It also wants to see cleaner sites and equipment with better signs advising people about what is happening. The county council is also calling for them to be more considerate by keeping noise and dust to a minimum at all times.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Member for Transport & Environment, said: "Unfortunately, digging up the roads to get to pipes and wires is something that we do have to put up with. But, I'm sure most people agree that navigating noisy, dusty and badly signed roadworks sites can be really intimidating. We want all contractors working on the roads of East Sussex to take greater care and be more considerate while they do this, which is why we have launched this scheme."

Local people will be able to contact the County Council and report back on how they think the contractor is doing on 0845 60 80 193.
