King Offa-Dorset Road traffic lights to be replaced

WORK to replace the King Offa Way-Dorset Road traffic lights is due to start on Monday, April 28.

The existing traffic lights are coming to the end of their serviceable life.

The Highways Agency says the new lights will offer increased reliability.

An agency spokesman said the work will take around 12 weeks to complete, weather permitting, and will also include construction of two new traffic islands.

"During the first five weeks of work, work will be carried out on the footway but there may be times when weekday lane closures around the junction will be needed to ensure the safety of road user and road workers.

"From Tuesday, May 27 there will be overnight lane closures on the eastbound A259 King Offa Way for 10 nights.

"From Monday, June 9 there will be overnight lane closures on the westbound A259 King Offa Way for 9 nights.

"There will then be approximately three weeks of works that will require temporary road closures, for which fully signed diversion routes will be in place.

"After this time, most of the work will take place on the footway with possible lane closures required to ensure safety is maintained.

"Temporary traffic lights will control traffic across the junction throughout the work until the new lights have been installed."

Martin Wright Route Performance Manager for Sussex said: "The Highways Agency is committed to investing in improved services.

"The current traffic lights are at the end of their serviceable life, and are prone to failure as one broken bulb can cause the whole system to fail.

"The new signals are more resilient and will make journeys more reliable and safer. We have planned the work carefully to limit delays, but we would advise drivers to plan their journeys and allow some extra time, especially when the diversions are in place."
