Since opening its doors in January, the Kino, in Lion Street, has become a community hub with local groups meeting regularly in its cafe and mezzanine area.
The Kino is based on part of the old Rye Library and adult education centre site at Lion Street.
The site was in danger of being lost from public use when owners Hastings College sought planning permission for a new housing development.
This was refused by Rother Council and Fletcher in Rye joined forces with St Mary’s Church to acquire the site.
Hugh Kermode, from Fletcher in Rye, said: “Since opening in January, the cinema has become the entertainment and leisure hub in the historic town.”
Since opening the cinema has won a number of top awards for its design.
Rye architects Jonathan Dunn, who designed the project, won the prestigious South East Award for best project from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
It was drawn from a shortlist of 16 projects from 42 entries. They also won an award from Rye Conservation Society.
