Learner drivers urged to ignore strike and attend tests

LEARNER drivers are being urged to ignore threats of strike action by driving examiners next Tuesday and ensure they turn up for their tests.

The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS), of which some driving examiners are members, has announced a national strike for Tuesday over pay and conditions.

The strike could cause some practical driving tests to be cancelled on the day at Goring's driving test centre in Westmoreland House, Strand Parade.

But the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has said candidates whose tests are cancelled can claim back expenses - provided they arrive at the centre as arranged. Anyone not turning up will not be able to claim any money back.

Rosemary Thew, DSA chief executive, said: "Not all examiners are members of the PCS union and even if they are, we cannot be sure that they will not turn up for work. We therefore want candidates to attend so that practical tests can be delivered if examiners are there. Theory tests are not affected and will be taking place as planned.

"Candidates who are unable to take their tests because of industrial action will not have to contact DSA to re-book. They should hear from us with a new date within five to ten working days. We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause".

If candidates find there is no examiner to take them on a test, a new date will automatically be rebooked by the DSA and an out of pocket expenses form will be sent along with details of the new test.

Call centres and other DSA offices may also be affected by the strike. But learners wishing to book a practical test will still be able to use the DSA's internet booking service at www.direct.gov.uk
