Members learned about his life at Westminster and the current political structures, including some amusing anecdotes. Mr Gibb also talked about some of the local issues he has been dealing with.

Marilyn Phipps said: “His talk was followed by a very informal and enjoyable discussion that covered a range of issues, from the current immigration problems to local issues such as the swimming centre and Littlehampton’s hospital.”

Mr Gibb, who is also the Minister of State for Schools, has been the town’s MP for 18 years. He had travelled down from London to attend the meeting and afterwards joined the women for refreshments, enjoying some WI home baking.

Mr Gibb said: “The Littlehampton WI meeting I attended was hugely enjoyable. The discussion ranged from the political problems confronting Hungary and the similar problems we are facing at Calais to more local issues such as the future of Littlehampton and its improvement as a town in recent years.”
