Mr Etherington resigned his seat on the council in a shock announcement at the end of January.

He was the only councillor left who had been elected by voters in Midhurst.

He joined the council in May 1983 and had served the last six years as chairman. But he left the council saying he had become increasingly frustrated by the confrontation inside the council.
