More 20mph zones on their way

WEST Sussex is already ahead of the field when it comes to 20mph speed restrictions '“ and more are on the way.

Government moves have just been announced to reduce the speed limit on thousands of residential roads to 20mph, but the county has been introducing them since 2000.

The Government policy is designed to cut road deaths by a third during the next decade.

School areas will be particularly targeted, with digital signs ordering drivers to cut their speed to 20mph or less when pupils are arriving or departing.

The county council has already introduced a priority-funded programme of 34 advisory 20mph speed limits outside schools and another 106 are already planned to be introduced over the next two years.

The 20mph speed limits or zones are particularly aimed at reducing road injuries and their introduction has been prioritised on that basis.
