MP urges unity on seafront drinking

WORTHING West MP Peter Bottomley has called for a joint initiative to help deal with the problem of street drinkers on the town's seafront.

He said work had been going on quietly for some time to create a strategy to prevent the promenade from becoming a meeting place for those with an alcohol problem and those who simply drank too much.

In discussions with Worthing Borough Council staff and police, it had emerged that Brighton appeared to have a 'wet garden' where this behaviour was controlled and accepted.

The idea of having the problem out of sight in the grounds of Centenary House, Durrington, arose.

"Police and social services have offices there and could observe and supervise.

"This was suggested for Worthing. Why did they think of leaving it on the promenade, one of the most frequented parts of Worthing, rather than on a more suitable site?" he asked.
