Netherfield Breakaway Club - Barbara Valentine, local well known artist, was our guest speaker for February. What a delight she was! Her late husband was a marine artist, her daughter Juliette Dodd is also an artist and together they have set up Mountfield Community Arts with regular classes and workshops in the village hall. Barbara has a fascinating history with a career covering many aspects of art from watercolors’, oils, glass engraving and designing enamel boxes. Since 1989 Barbara’s obsession and profession has been with miniatures and her many exhibitions and talent have resulted in numerous awards including a first prize in the floral and botanical section in the Miniature Art Society of Florida in 2013. During her visit Barbara not only spoke about her painting but to our delight also sketched and painted five models in watercolors’, each one only taking 15 minutes or so! If anyone is interested in attending classes at Mountfield Village Hall please contact her on 0 1424 838264 or Juliette on 01424 424010
Subs were due, still at a very reasonable £16, with guests paying only £3. May and Sheila presided over the raffle. Teas and coffees were served and we said goodbye, thank you and good luck to Coral who has looked after us so well for some considerable time during our meetings at The White Hart, Netherfield.
Ann Gidlow, a member and local retired Head-teacher for 11 years at a special needs school gave a very interesting talk at our March meeting. We learnt about the many aspects of moderate, severe and multiple physical and mental disorders including Down’s syndrome and Autism and how the staff of 100 coped with 116 statemented pupils, far more boys than girls. A curriculum was followed as near as possible to main stream schooling, which included lots of music and sports. Ann not only had to run the school and recruit staff but also dealt with budgets and organised trips, transport and Sports and Open Days! Fortunately she had an excellent and dedicated staff team as all pupils took part in concerts and Sports’ Days. The Duchess of Gloucester was an enthusiastic supporter. There was an opportunity to ask questions and this gave us an insight into the immense amount of work, experience and knowledge required in the running of this type of school.
Our May outing Friary Gardens was discussed, members were reminded that for those who wished to have lunch before this would be at the Robert de Mortain on the Ridge followed by a tour and tea at the Gardens. It was proposed that we will have a trip on the Kent & East Sussex Railway in September including tea on board. Friends and family welcome. A deposit of £5 was agreed. We then enjoyed tea and the raffle was called.
