A total of £216,934 of funding has been awarded to 29 groups in Hastings and Rother which work to improve health and wellbeing, access to local health-care and other support services.

Awards of up to £10,000 each from NHS Hastings and Rother Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) have been made to organisations which support people with mental health issues, learning disabilities and/or long-term conditions, children and young people, older people or black and minority ethnic groups.

The grants scheme is part of the CCG’s Healthy Hastings and Rother programme to tackle health inequality in the area.

One of the groups awarded funding is the 4 Centres CIC, situated in the Tressell ward of Hastings, which has some of the highest levels of health deprivation in the country.

Development manager Robin Hill said: “Hastings Healthy Neighbourhood Scheme will reduce isolation and improve health and well-being by providing practical support and advice to older and disabled people or anyone who is in need of long or short term help.

“The funding means we can employ a part-time community coordinator to recruit, train and support a team of ‘good neighbour’ volunteer helpers from the local community.

“The ‘good neighbours’ will perform neighbourly activities such as taking someone to a GP appointment, checking they are eating properly, perhaps giving the occasional car lift, minor household tasks and form-filling, particularly online.”

4 Centre CIC has been given £9,970.

St Michael’s Hospice, which was damaged by fire last year, has been granted £10,000 to support the expansion of the service within Hastings and Rother wards.

Citizens Advice 1066 will also get £10,000 to help meet costs for its FADES project, providing money and debt advice to support those with complex long term health and mental health issues.

Heart of Sidley will get £10,000 to help provide two projects for young people, focussing on volunteering and course opportunities, plus offering advice on careers, bullying, drugs and sexual health.
