INSPIRATIONAL: An Inspirational Summer of Sport. I think the sales of tissues and hankies over the last few months have probably kept the National GDP afloat, kept the Treasury alive and alight, and the nation's collective pride mopped. Soggy sleeves, stuffed handbags, and bits of kitchen roll emerging from behind sofa cushions. And that's just my house. So many sniffly moments and so many outright sobs of sheer pride from one event to the next, from track to water to stadia, from one Olympics to another. I have to say that, for the last six weeks and especially over the last 11 days, the achievements in both the Olympics and Paralympics have not only been extraordinary in their first class professionalism and style, but have been absolutely enthralling and awe inspiring. And Rio got it right after all, with people realising what a jewel they had on their doorstep and turning out to see some of the greatest performances of all time. More than anything, I think the phrase that was adopted by Barack Obama, once again has become the mantra for everyone '˜Yes We can'. Yes, we can do what we set out to achieve, if we just work hard, and really believe and then we can enjoy all rewards received. Positivity and Enthusiasm. Or is that just me being Pollyanna again?

NINFIELD BOWLS CLUB: Candlelight Bowls, now this seems very romantic and yet it also conjures up all sorts of invitations to disaster. So, what gives? Carole has reported that last Tuesday, that hot Tuesday, the club held their annual Candlelight Bowls evening, with all the rinks being lit up by tiny tea-lights all along each side, it has been likened to a Fairy Airstrip. At 6.30pm, the members started cooking hot dog sausages and sorting out the teams that would be playing, then with much fun and while the sun started to set, eight teams gently competed, by flickering candle light, for the grand prizes of boxes of chocolate biscuits. Now, that’s my sort of fun. The whole evening was thoroughly enjoyed once again, especially in such brilliant weather. Everyone is looking forward to next year’s season starting. The last two matches resulted as follows: Thursday Ninfield 74 Fairlight 74, Sunday Ninfield 82 Hastings Observer 64. The Ninfield Club ended up sixth in the Rother League tables, which they were very pleased with. Over the autumn and winter, the club keeps going with other events and social occasions, so always watch out for more information from Carole; she will keep us up to date.

LOCAL HISTORY GROUP: Tomorrow, Saturday, at the Memorial Hall, with doors opening at 2pm, there will be an exhibition/display of photographs and memorabilia on the History of Ninfield School; while from 2.30pm there will be another opportunity to hear the wonderful talk given by Liz Darbyshire and David Swales that was so acclaimed on its last presentation. Entry is minimal at £2 for non-members and £1 for members and everyone is encouraged to arrive in good time because even though the venue is bigger the audience last time was huge and on Saturday another full house is hoped for. Don’t forget that the unique 2017 Ninfield Local History Group Calendar will be available to purchase, for only £6. This has been compiled with pictures of scenes from the village created and painted by local, resident artists and would be a fantastic, original Christmas present. SONG CONCERT: Tomorrow, Saturday, evening at 7.30pm St. Oswald’s Church, Hooe there will be a lovely evening of Songs and Arias from Light Opera and Opera, sung by Grace Constable soprano and Gary Marriot tenor, with accompaniment by Duncan Reid. Tickets are running out, but the few remaining can be bought from Janet Pattison on 845087 at £10 per head, this includes a light supper and a glass of wine. All profits from the evening go towards the much needed restoration of the church roof.

CARNIVAL ASSOCIATION: On Wednesday at 8.30pm in the Working Men’s Club the next meeting will be held to discuss the Carnival Theme for 2017, the AGM to be held on Wednesday October 12 and the Carnivals’ contributions towards the Halloween Ball which will be held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday October 29. The Carnival Committee run the bar for this forthcoming event and will also be donating some fantastic prizes for the raffle, as well as generally helping organise the fun, food and frolics that made last year’s Ball so enjoyable and such a success. If you’d like to find out more about the committee and all the events planned, please come along to the Working Men’s Club on September 23 at 8.30pm, it would be great to see even more new people. There’s always a fantastic atmosphere, much hilarity and friendly banter, with typical Ninfield enthusiasm underpinning the whole Committee. CHRISTIAN VOICES: I’ve had a lovely email from Alan and Jacqueline Young with an early heads up for the next performance from their drama group, Christian Voices. The Miraculous Birth will be performed at the Ninfield Methodist Church Hall, Church Lane, on Saturday October 8 at 3pm. The play is based on the events leading up to the birth of John the Baptist, and is written by Alan Young with music composed by Dave Chamberlain. This promises to be another popular afternoon of entertainment, admission is free and there will be light refreshments also available. Everyone is welcome to attend and if the last show’s success is anything to go by, it’s advisable to put the date in your diary now and make sure you get there early.
