Happy New Year: I hope you had a good celebration and we all look forward to a great year (with a little trepidation, I suspect).
Badminton: The badminton clubs meet on Fridays in the Pretious Sports Hall – 5.30pm Primary, 6.30pm Secondary and 8pm adults (14+). Adults also meet at 5.45pm on Mondays. New faces (and old) very welcome, especially if it helps with the New Year’s Resolutions!
Shortmat Bowls: Another choice for keeping active in the winter months is Shortmat Bowls- in the Village Hall on Mondays and Wednesdays at 2pm.
Coffee Stop: Meet up with familiar faces at Coffee Stop each Wednesday in the Church Centre between 10am and 12 noon.
WI: The Women’s Institute meets on the first Wednesday of each month (7th January) at 2pm in the Jenkins Room of the Village Hall. This month, Mr Chris Cooey will entertain with a tale of Rogues, rebels and rascals of Kent. The competition is “Something beginning with A” – a challenge for the enterprising ladies! The WI has a great programme planned for 2015 with a variety of speakers on different subjects from Joyce Grenfell, to Bletchley Park and Flotsam and Jetsam, so there should be something for everyone. Anyone who would like to come along for a taster afternoon, please call Margaret Hinds 01797 253341.
Library: The Library is open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 2 to 4pm, situated on the ground floor of the snooker club. There is a wide variety of books, a section for children, large print books and jigsaws. The library is run by a group of volunteers who will be pleased to see you whenever you visit.
Parish Council: The next meeting will be in the Jenkins Room at 7pm on Thursday.
Quiz: A very popular annual event, the Conservation Society’s Wine & Wisdom evening is on Saturday 10th January. Call Mervyn to book your place – teams of eight at £7.50 a head, to include wine and a light supper. If you haven’t got a team together, Mervyn will be happy to put you together with some like-minded people. 01797 253443.
Boot Sale: The first Boot Sale of 2015 is on Sunday 11th January. Stallholders come at 8am to set up, with opening to the public from 9-11.30am. Book through Marie Edwards - Hon. Secretary NVHT (01797 253264)
Calendars: If you haven’t got a calendar for Christmas, nip along to the Spar and get your Northiam Bonfire Society calendar for only £2.49! – or call Terry on 253375.
Flu: Just a quick plug for the day job! The uptake of flu vaccinations for the under 65s with chronic conditions has been quite low this year. Although flu is an unpleasant but self-limiting infection in otherwise healthy people, for at risk groups it can cause serious illness and even death. If you are pregnant or suffer from asthma, COPD, diabetes, chronic heart, liver or kidney disease, you may be entitled to a free flu jab either from your surgery or from participating pharmacies. With the risk of hospitals being full this winter, don’t take the risk!
