Opera with local slant launched

A NEW opera about the Finnish prisoners of Lewes is coming to the town this summer.

Last night the Finnish Prisoner was officially launched by the Mayor of Lewes, Cllr Merlin Milner, at a special evening at the town hall.

The opera has been written by Orlando Gough and Steven Plaice and will be performed by the Paddock Arts group.

The opera tells story of 170 captured Finnish sailors who were captured during the Crimean War and brought to Lewes Naval Prison.

The production will boast a 40-strong choir including a number of Finnish singers, and following its July run in Lewes the opera will then be heard in Finland.
