A fearful picture

JOHN Clemens (Letters, Observer, April 29) accepts that those who currently cycle along the promenade are cautious - although he paints a fearful picture of what might happen if cycling were legally sanctioned.

I was recently in Worthing which, like Bexhill, has a large elderly population. It was a glorious summer-like day and people were strolling, dog-walking and cycling along the promenade.

Signs stated that cyclists should ride with care and that pedestrians had priority, and this was clearly being respected. Walkers and cyclists mingled easily. I saw no “ fast, frequent cycling” such as Mr Clemens fears.

He says that the road is the correct place for cycling. The seaside road is busy and dangerous, with some fast-moving traffic. Cars are often parked on both sides, and along a large section drivers are obliged to reverse out of parking spaces.

A cycle lane anywhere along the front would be as impractical as that along Cooden Drive.I have seen the result of a car colliding with a cyclist along that road. The injuries were horrific and, I believe, ongoing.

Surely we can all learn to share the pleasure of being by the sea as so many do on promenades elsehere where cycling is permitted,
