An Alpine rarity?

A FEW days ago my husband was washing our car on the drive, when only 3ft away, on a brick pillar, a little sparrow-like bird was singing to him. As he whistled back, it repeated his song.

A neighbour came by and witnessed this amazing scene. Having no camera ready, we looked in our Collins British Birds book, but to no avail in the British section.

However, after looking in the rare birds section, we are sure this sparrow-size bird, with a grey under-belly and head, was an Alpine accentor, an autumn/winter visitor.

Is it rare? Has anyone else seen one? We are 100 per cent sure of this sighting. Please could you publish this letter, as we would like to solve this sighting.

We haven’t seen it since, but as it’s so like a sparrow, we hope it might still be around.
