This year had an exciting finish, with two local golfers tying for first place on 23 points. On count-back, the prize went to ex-Royal Navy seaman Nigel Lohman who won by one point from the area’s postman Ian Brown.

Brighton and Hove Albion supporter Nigel said: “I knew I had played well but wasn’t expecting this. It’s a dream come true. I only hope the Seagulls play as well this afternoon.”

Runner up Ian congratulated his rival through gritted teeth.

The competition started in 2008 following the death of John Ide, a well-known local character and long-time regular at the Rising Sun, who himself actually disliked golf. Since that date, the competition has raised over £2,500 for charity and the event has always been generously supported by the staff at Brooklands. The money raised has been shared between the two charities John supported, namely the RNLI and the Sussex Air Ambulance; this year over £300 will go the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
