Hymns complaint

SUNDAY evening hymn singing was started in the 1960s and has been held at or near the De La Warr Pavilion, namely the terrace or the Colonnade, ever since.

That is, until this year, when the trustees of the Pavilion have decreed in their wisdom that it is to be banished to the east end of the seafront.

This hymn singing is an act of Christian witness, which should be taking place centrally where the most people may have an opportunity to see and hear and join in if they wish.

Local people, through their taxes to Rother District Council, contribute a substantial sum to the running of the De La Warr Pavilion.

The Trustees of the Pavilion, however, appear to have no interest whatsoever in local people or the town or its activities.

It is time they woke up to local demands for some return on their money and also to show some respect for our Christian heritage.

• A spokesman for Rother District Council said this event hasn’t been happening at the Colonnade recently as building work is still underway for the renovation of the seafront under Next Wave.

A spokeswoman for the De La Warr Pavilion echoed this as regards the terrace, adding: “Also we are programming the roof terrace on Sunday evenings with live music so we could not have hymn singing on the terrace at the same time.

“Churches Together has been aware of this for some time.

“However the first Churches Together service on June 5 was held on the DLWP terrace and the final service, as in previous years, will be held in the DLWP auditorium on July 31.”
