Meadow comes alive for scarecrow event

Many visitors were children, most of whom had helped to create the 31 colourful scarecrows that made a remarkable sight, standing about, leaning against trees, or lying in chairs as if exhausted.

The Event followed the recent hay-making (WSCT 28 August), and included a competition for the best scarecrow, which was won overall by Megan and Sally Sikora. In the Group section, Green Gym were the winners, and Heather and Evan Surley received the prize for naming the Event’s mascots. Judges were Jean Griffin and Lucie Walton, assisted by Laura Walton. Lucie’s father-in-law once farmed the Earles Meadow land.

There were stalls offering refreshment with home-made cakes and produce, and a plant stall, proceeds from which went towards the funds of the Conservation Group. The Group has much to celebrate this week, having achieved an ‘Outstanding’ Award in the It’s Your Neighbourhood Section of the RHS South and South-East in Bloom ceremony held this year at Brighton last week.

Susan Brundish, Chairman of Horsham in Bloom, who was amongst the visitors, commented: “This is a really fun, community event.”
