Profit more important than unemployment

My thoughts recently turned to the phrase ‘Made in England’ which, many years ago, was a guarantee of sound workmanship, and, out of curiosity, I was prompted to carry out a small survey of our household products.

I found, to my consternation, that my Marks & Spencer vest and pants were made in Sri Lanka, my Clarks shoes were made in Vietnam, Boots the Chemist imported denture-cleaning tablets from India, Garnier shampoo came from Italy, Yardley soap was imported from the USA, Persil washing-up liquid was made in the EU, and Johnsons Baby Powder was made in China.

There must be many more similar incidents of large concerns avoiding manufacturing their products in the UK, adding to our unemployment situation and balance-of-payments deficits.

I suppose it is esteemed more important to make substantial profits, rather than operate in the national interest, and that conscience and shame are irrelevant.
