Shocked by these selfish and cynical people

My initial thought of Wick was that there seemed to be a strong sense of community.

How wrong I was when an elderly gentleman had a particularly nasty fall in the street.

I was not the only one about, and certainly not the nearest, but the only two people to help this man was another elderly gentleman and myself, yet less than eight feet away had been an employee at a business, watching the drama unfold with no offers of help or support; others, too, walked readily by and ignored the whole situation.

How is it that people in the Littlehampton area have become so selfish and cynical that they feel it's ok to walk by a person in such obvious distress?
