Still waiting for a proper cycle path

I READ with interest the letter from Paul Dendle (Gazette, March 11).I agree with everything he says about the Arundel bypass and also agree with the lack of concern and interest shown by Derek Whitington, the county council cabinet member for strategic planning and transport on this and other issues.

I am also on the joint downland committee, as well as the western area committee and its highway and transport working party, and the cabinet member's non-appearance at these meetings is very noticeable.

I am also on the development control committee at Arun, and when the Littlehampton Tesco's application for enlargement appeared, I asked that a cycle path be built on the A259 between the river and the Tesco roundabout.

This was agreed at that meeting, with Tesco funding this.

Some two years later this has still not been done to a proper standard.

Last July I spoke to Mr Whittington about this, but found him very unhelpful.

He asked me to collate all the papers and send them to the county council officer, which I did.

I have not seen or heard from him since and with his known record, I believe it would be a pointless exercise to try again.

All I want is the cycle path to built in accordance with the legal agreement.

The western area highways working party will be looking at the future transport plan for Bognor Regis this year, and I will be interested to see if the cabinet member takes any interest in the proceedings.
