The cost of keeping country park green

I’D like to respond to Andrew Mier’s letter in last week’s paper regarding the introduction of car park charges at Hastings Country Park (Observer March 4).

As he is a Fairlight parish councillor, I’m sure he can appreciate that I have a duty to protect the interests of the people of Ore and the people of Hastings.

Hastings Country Park is pretty much staffed at a minimum - our small team work extremely hard to maintain the hundreds of acres to a standard which allows us to keep our Green Flag status.

The work is already partly done by volunteers and we use all sources of funding available.

Without parking charges we would be forced to make cuts to the upkeep of the park.

In these circumstances, parking charges are the least worst option.

These are very hard times for the people of Hastings and in many parts of the UK. This solution means we can still access our park free of charge.

Blue badge holders will park free, most of us will pay £1 for a whole day’s parking, a small cost which will allow us to preserve the park for future generations.
