Time to crack down on double yellow parking

I WRITE with reference to M. J. French's letter "Restrictions are unfair to Pier Road residents" (Gazette, May 20).

While I empathise with the sentiments expressed in this letter I, as a motorist, object to persons parking illegally.

The yellow lines are there for a purpose, road safety.

As a regular user of South Terrace, Pier Road and Beach Road, I am amazed at the total disregard for the parking restrictions in place in these places.

The illegal parkers seemingly know that the council does not enforce the parking restrictions.

* South Terrace – cars parked on double yellow lines, forcing cars trying to turn into South Terrace from adjacent roads to edge forward into the path of unsighted cars.

The mini-roundabout at the end of Fitzalan Road is often obstructed by cars parked on South Terrace on the yellow lines on the eastbound side of the road.

* Pier Road – cars parked either side on double yellow lines, creating single lane traffic in either direction and pedestrians treating the road as a pedestrian precinct!

* Beach Road – cars parked either side on double yellow lines.

* New Road – cars parked on double yellow lines, especially around the old Travis Perkins site which, with the hoarding recently installed, create a significant hazard to cars turning into Beach Road.

Some of the cars parked there have such a layer of dirt on them that they seem to have been there weeks if not months.

The council is neglecting its responsibilty of providing safe travel to road users, including pedestrians, in these areas.

As I mentioned at the start of my letter, I empathise with the sentiments of M. J. French.

I feel that the residents of the surrounding areas should have free parking permits in the available car parks, but surprisingly enough these are the only areas that are policed by the council!

If I were to build an extension on the back of my house without planning permission the council would soon be on my case for breaking laws.

What is the difference with breaking parking laws?
