Town Forum letters

I HAVE been following with interest the correspondence in the Bexhill Observer over the past two weeks on the subject of the procedures of the Bexhill Town Forum, and feel that some of these have obviously not been properly understood.

The draft Guide to the Forum defines the elected members of the committee as follows: “The executive committee consists of the chairman, vice-chairman and six other members of the Forum, all of whom are elected by the membership.”

Any references to, or rules regarding, the executive committee in any part of the Guide thereby automatically apply to the chairman and vice-chairman as well as to the other elected members.

The requirement for nomination by two members of the Forum prior to election therefore does also apply to candidates for the positions of chairman and vice-chairman.

Your first correspondent’s concern about the election of the new chairman, was clearly not an objection to the candidate himself, but solely to the manner in which the election was conducted. That being so, the suggestion that this could be addressed by instigating a vote of no confidence in the new chairman was therefore not appropriate, as it would not address the actual point being made. The new Guide to the Forum defining its procedures was adopted by the membership at the last meeting, albeit unfortunately with some amendments still outstanding. I hope that these will be resolved in the near future.
