We’re not naïve

I, too, like your recent correspondents, was horrified to realise that the saga of the swimming pool was still ongoing, just when we thought common sense had prevailed and it was staying where it was and being refurbished.

It seems that councillor Paul Dendle cannot relinquish his objective of demolishing our seafront to let the developers cover it with flats. There are several sites in Littlehampton where flats are already in the process of being built, so there is no necessity to ruin our lovely, open seafront and limit access to it, apart, of course, from the pound signs floating in front of the eyes of Arun District Council at the thought of ‘high value homes’ being built.

Littlehampton is primarily a family resort, and families want facilities they can get to easily from the beach. I live in Littlehampton and have to confess I’d never even heard of Daisyfields, let alone how to get there, so how visitors to the town would be expected to find it is beyond me.

Mr Dendle’s comments (Gazette story, June 19) about obese and unfit people being able to get to it more easily has a hollow ring, when the seafront site is far more accessible, and on a bus route.

The same logic applies to the Windmill Entertainment Centre, saved in the teeth of opposition from Arun and now thriving again. A cinema just off the seafront is a great boon to tourists on a wet day, to say nothing of locals who don’t want to travel to Bognor or Worthing to see a film.

No, the whole thing – Mr Dendle’s leaked e-mail, reminiscent of the meetings behind closed doors when the future of the Windmill was being discussed, meetings which even other councillors were not aware of – smacks of a not-so-hidden agenda to let in the developers.

The people of Littlehampton are not as naive and gullible as Arun hopes and will fight any bid to build on the seafront tooth and nail.
