Wide enough to share

IN response to Derek Wilkins’ letter (Gazette, February 3), can I just remind him that the wide promenade is one of the few safe places local people could use for cycling?

As a visually impaired person who is registered disabled, the opportunity of finding somewhere safe to cycle with my family is almost impossible. Please do not tar all cyclists with the same brush, or presume all disabled people have the same needs.

Mr Wilkins spoke of fast-moving machines. However, the biggest danger to me as a person with a “hidden” disability is people in mobility scooters expecting me to see them and move out of their way. There is no restriction on them at the moment – maybe they should be banned as well?

I could quite easily use a mobility scooter, as it seems to be the choice of transport for lots of people with or without a disability, but how would that keep me fit?

Finally, let the children of Littlehampton have a safe place to cycle across the county – all paths that are wide enough should be shared and if anyone, whether on a bike or on a mobility scooter, behaves irresponsibly, deal with them –let’s have fewer rules and restrictions.
