Worring words from Mrs Neno

I AM not a supporter of the BNP.

However, I am a believer in democracy and in the right of free speech.

I found the comments of newly-elected Yapton Conservative councillor Emma Neno, as reported in the Gazette (March 27), quite worrying.

Mrs Neno appears to be indicating that all the "mainstream" parties had agreed not to have an election, and she blames the BNP for forcing an election by fielding a candidate.

Had the BNP not done so, surely the citizens of Yapton would have been denied their democratic right to elect a councillor.

I wonder what the preferred option of the mainstream parties was '“ for Mrs Neno to be handed the seat, and the expenses to go with it?

Or was the plan for Yapton to be without a councillor for the next year or so?

Either way, it is not what democracy is about.

Further, Mrs Neno states that she is worried that the BNP candidate managed to achieve 200 or so votes.

As far as I am aware, the BNP has not yet been outlawed, and for the time being, voters can still make a free and secret vote and should not be criticised for doing so, until, of course, our democratic rights are taken away!
