Emma McPhail appeared on the television quiz show The Chase on January 25.

She said, “I love quizzes so have quite a few pub quiz books which I read avidly in the hope that some trivia might lodge in the recesses of my mind somewhere.

“I also enjoy answering questions on almost any TV quiz and play quizzes online to keep learning new things.

“It is my favourite quiz show and I wanted to meet Bradley Walsh, so finally took the plunge.”

Emma aimed to take her mum, Sue, to New Zealand if she won any money. She said after living out there for a number of years she’d love to show her mum the country.

Emma was the first contestant in the show’s 11-year run to sing during a question in order to work out the answer. The show host Bradley Walsh said, “That was great, I loved it.”

Emma said, “Brad was brilliant. Funny, professional, totally relaxed, lovely and obviously in his element. We had a great rapport and made each other laugh a lot, even in bits not shown on the programme.”

Emma went up against the newest chaser, Darragh ‘The Manace’ Ennis.

She said, “Darragh was really nice. Friendly and very clever, a real brainbox. He said I was a steady player and congratulated me afterwards on my performance.

“My legs went to jelly when we first entered the studio and during the cash builder but Brad put me at ease and it was much easier at the table because it felt like Brad and I were against the chaser together.”

Despite getting off to a good start and winning £5,000 in her individual round, Emma and her team lost against Darragh in the final chase.

Emma said, “The three of us that made it to the final chase were pipped at the post by four seconds, missing out on £13,000 between us. It was a shame, one correct push back could have made all the difference but they were obscure questions.

“It was such great fun and I’m so pleased to have taken part, fulfilling a dream of being on tea-time telly.”
