Eastbourne Bonfire and the Steampunk Festival 2020 will no longer be going ahead due to the ‘unprecedented period of disruption’ caused by the pandemic, organisers said.

In a statement released on social media, Eastbourne Bonfire Society said, “We write to you during an unprecedented period of disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As you will be aware, current government advice continues to restrict large events and it is clear social distancing is likely to continue for some time.

“It is therefore with deep regret that we announce the cancellation of both our annual Bonfire celebrations and Steampunk Festival, due to be held on October 3 and September 5 and 6 respectively.”

The society said, while this will be a disappointing decision for many, staging safe events is its number one priority.

Organisers also said they did not wish to put undue strain on local services at this time.

The statement said, “As a not for profit organisation who do not rely on any grant funding, our events are only possible through the dedication of our members raising funds all year round. Sadly, the cancellation of so many local events has presented a major challenge this year.

“We’d like to thank all those who continue to support us, without whom there would be no Eastbourne Bonfire Society.

“We hope to keep you updated of any new events as soon as possible, including our 2021 Bonfire celebrations, which will mark 20 years since the society was rekindled – a celebration we are more determined than ever to make truly unforgettable!”

This comes after the cancellation of Eastbourne’s annual airshow, Airbourne, was announced last month.
