Ms Downs, who runs the UK Pesticides Campaign, decided to take on the Government in 2001 to protect people in the countryside from exposure to pesticides. Her landmark judicial review challenge against the Government's approach and policy regarding the use of pesticides in crop-spraying was granted permission on all three grounds and the five-day High Court hearing will take place this July.

As part of the prize for also being one of the five national finalists for the overall Inspirational Woman of the Year award, she visited 10 Downing Street on Friday for tea with Primer Minister Gordon Brown's wife, Sarah, along with the four other finalists and their guests.
