Calls have been issued for the University of Brighton to provide more information on what its plans for the Hastings campus are.

Although the university has issued a statement on the review it is still unclear what it will mean for staff and students.

Those attending a student union assembly at the Priory Square building (March 8) said they were told the Hastings campus would be ‘phased out’ over the next two years.

Hastings and Rye MP Amber Rudd said: “The university needs to communicate the full details of what this enhanced relationship with Sussex Coast College means for our town and its students without delay.

“If they listen to us they will realise that the university’s campus in Hastings needs to remain a central part of our town.

“If this fails to form part of the new offer made by the university, I will be taking this matter up with the Minister for Universities.”

Hastings & Rye Labour chairman Paul Barnett and vice-chairman Sarah Owen said: “The university’s withdrawal is incredibly disappointing news.

“The University of Brighton had not only secured public money and a top quality facility in the centre of town, but it also had the trust of students, staff and the wider community – we fear that trust was misplaced and it will have a detrimental impact on our local economy and education.

“We would ask that the University of Brighton give a clearer indication of their plans, reconsider their decision to close the campus over two years and give a genuine reassurance to all students and staff by staying in Hastings.”
