The council has proposed expanding Cornfield Primary School, in Cornfield Place, as part of its monitoring of the growing demand for school places.

Under the plans, the school would expand by more than 30 pupils, which is greater than 25 per cent of its current capacity.

Because of the size of the proposed expansion a full statutory public consultation is required.

Cornfield is a special school for boys and girls at key stage 3 and 4 with behavioural educational social difficulties.

It has a planned place admission number of 48 pupils.

The council is proposing to permanently expand the school to include provision for key stage 2 pupils.

The consultation is a two stage process.

Initially, a public consultation takes place over four weeks of term time, and then the cabinet member for children – start of life, Peter Evans, will decide whether to publish statutory notices.

Comments can be submitted over a further four weeks.

If he decides to proceed, the statutory notices are expected to be published in March 2014 and a final decision would be taken in May 2014.
