RETHINK ON PARK HAILED BY WEALD CAMPAIGNERS

NEWS that the Government plans to re-open the public inquiry into the proposed South Downs national park has been welcomed by campaigners.

Among them was Chichester campaigner Andrew Tyrie, who asked Jonathan Shaw, the Minister for National Parks and for the South East, for the rethink.

He said: "The latest proposals are clearly unacceptable, not least because they could put at risk the Western Weald's existing protection as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

"Nor does the latest proposal offer sufficient protection for those who would find themselves living in the park.

"Most of my constituents do not want to see local planning decisions taken by an anonymous body by fiat. That is what a South Downs Park Authority may mean. Local planning for the constituency must stay local as part of any change to the current AONB status."
