Rogue traders warning after Littlehampton couple conned

POLICE were lying in wait for a suspected conman the second time he visited an elderly couple’s home in Littlehampton.

Three men called at a house in Highdown Drive on Tuesday (July 5), claiming to be from a company which had carried out work on the couple’s roof 10 years ago and wanting to check it because the guarantee had run out.

They even got the husband to climb up a ladder so they could show him what work needed doing.

The trio took a sum of money and said they would return the next day for the rest.

The husband was suspicious and shared his concerns with a relative, who alerted police. The following day, officers were on the spot when one of the men, a 23-year-old from Horsham, arrived, and he was arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation. He was released on police bail while enquiries continue. The other men are yet to be traced.

The incident led to police issuing renewed advice to home owners about possible rogue traders:

* do not allow anyone to come into your house uninvited;

* never agree for any work to be carried out unless you are happy that they are genuine traders who you have asked to attend;

* ask for a quote in writing and a telephone number;

* telephone your local trading standards office if you are not happy with their tactics.

PC Jackie Shears, of Littlehampton police, said: “Unfortunately, rogue traders target the elderly and vulnerable, people who may be intimidated and perhaps afraid to challenge them.

“If you have an elderly relative, neighbour or friend, please try to make them aware of this problem and if you know of any who may have been targeted by this type of fraud, please inform Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999. If the offenders are there, don’t hesitate to dial 999.”
