The Battle Abbey Gatehouse roof opened specially for a romantic proposal on Christmas Eve (Thursday, December 24).

Tom Gray, a member of Christmas and Battle Chamber committees, was looking for a unique and memorable location to pop the question to his girlfriend Judi and could think of nowhere better than the roof of the abbey gatehouse.

Battle Abbey property manger Jo Stewart could not resist making the festive period extra special for the couple.

“As far as I know, this is the only rooftop proposal the abbey gatehouse has seen,” she said.

“From next summer, it will be open to all visitors to the abbey and we are about to start work up there, so this is a rare chance for a very memorable proposal, and being a romantic at heart, I couldn’t resist Tom’s request.

“By the way – she did say yes!
