Rowing club celebrates its stack of achievements

A CELEBRATORY evening organised by Bexhill Rowing Club at Centre Stage, London Road, on Friday, December 10 helped to demonstrate why the club is such an asset to the town.

Formed in June 1893 it is Bexhill’s oldest sporting club, yet has a burgeoning dynamism reflected in the vast array of recently won trophies displayed at Friday’s gathering. Guests included town mayor, Councillor Jimmy Carroll, and other leading members of the community.

Spokesman Bob Mitchell said: “As our choice of venue perhaps suggested, we want to put the club centre stage now that it is doing so spectacularly well. “Very few people seem to know that the club actually holds seven world records, for instance, and we need to make folk much more aware.

“It’s particularly important that we now try to get the town behind us because we’re looking to raise some £70,000 to furnish and equip a new boathouse that’s replacing our old premises near the Colonnade as part of the Next Wave project.”

Mr Mitchell said that by providing better facilities it was hoped to attract more members, especially females and youngsters, to provide strength in depth.

Former Bexhill mayor and Rother district councillor Paul Lendon, who was at Friday’s event, said: “The club really has put Bexhill on the map and made it the envy of the South when it comes to rowing. I do hope townspeople will support the club and show their pride in its achievements.”
