Rush-hour grid-lock after Marsh Road crash

Rush-hour grid-lock resulting from this morning's two-car Marsh Road crash extended back half-way up Birk Dale at its peak.

The driver of an east-bound Ford Orion was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being cut free from the wreck of the vehicle by firefighters from Bexhill and Pevensey.

Both the Orion and a four-by-four were extensively damaged in the head-on collision near the Hooe turn-off at the Lamb Inn.

The impact pushed the four-by-four into a ditch.

Sussex Police Road Policing Unit officers shut the A259 trunk road from Pevensey to Little Common and set up diversions.

But the accident happened at peak time during the morning school run.

Heavy morning traffic backed-up in Little Common Road and Cooden sea road as long-distance lorry drivers stopped at the round-about police check-point to seek alternative routes.

Frustrated motorists attempted u-turns in the road to get away from the congestion.
